The pension of cosmonauts in Russia justifies the effort and labor that people spent on it in the course of their activities. After all, if the majority of the younger generation does not now dream of becoming an astronaut, then older people are well aware of the fact that almost every boy in childhood wanted to master this profession. She was not only prestigious and popular, but also very well paid. What happened now? Do people who have dedicated their entire lives to astronautics and achieved some heights in this field receive high pensions? Let's try to understand this issue.
- A few facts
- Retirement
- What is the salary
- Conditions for obtaining a cosmonaut's pension
- Pension for the loss of a breadwinner – an astronaut
What is the reason for leaving early?
Before any flight into outer space, astronauts are examined. A strict medical board checks mental stability and the absence of diseases, including using modern simulators and devices.
Medical workers are required to check a specialist before each subsequent spacewalk, since working in a state of weightlessness leads to the development of the following diagnoses:
- Vestibular disorder;
- Swelling;
- Back pain;
- Radiation exposure.
It is not for nothing that work in the field of astronautics is considered a harmful and dangerous profession for human health. On board a spaceship, astronauts have to consume vitamins and high-calorie foods. This leads to obesity. And you can lose weight only on Earth through intense physical activity.
Astronauts retire when they are unable to perform their duties due to health reasons. Thus, American test pilot Scott Nely retired at the age of 52. In Russia there are also corresponding benefits for harmfulness.
For example, cosmonauts are awarded the highest officer rank, which gives them the right to:
- submitting a resignation report prematurely;
- count on a decent pension;
- additionally receive a service pension.
What is the salary
Many people are interested in the question of whether astronauts are paid high? Of course, it is difficult to find official sources of information and find out how much a person actually receives. Since the field of astronautics is secret and not subject to disclosure.
But there is information on the Internet that, for example, in 2020 the average salary of an astronaut was 250,000 rubles. (110 thousand rubles for beginners and 300 thousand rubles after 2-3 flights) on the ground and 1.7 million rubles. when working in space.
Do not forget that an astronaut never receives a bare salary, since the work involves various allowances at both the federal and regional levels. In addition, work of this type includes an allowance for the academic degree and scientific title of candidate, associate professor, professor. The astronauts themselves note that it is a sin for them to complain about wages, since in most cases they are very high. Thus, high wages make it possible for astronauts to receive a high pension in the future.
How is work assessed?
The pension of cosmonauts in Russia primarily depends on the salary at the workplace. The salary depends on the role played by one or another employee.
Examples of salaries from January 1, 2013:
Job title | salary |
astronaut candidate | 60 thousand |
Astronaut | 70 thousand + bonus for length of service |
astronaut after flight | 70 thousand + bonus for length of service + travel allowances (up to 130 thousand rubles) |
Training staff (instructors) | 90 thousand + allowances (up to 200 thousand rubles) |
In addition, people working in the field of astronautics receive bonuses for their academic degrees and bonuses for the implementation of plans to conquer the Universe. Wages can be very high, which has a positive effect on the formation of a pension in the near future.
Payments to family members of astronauts in the event of their death
Unconditionally, only family members of the cosmonaut who was awarded the title “Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR” or “Pilot-Cosmonaut of the Russian Federation” can apply for a survivor’s pension . For other cosmonauts, the law establishes a survivor's pension only when his death is related to the preparation or conduct of a flight or test.
The monthly payment is 40% of the amount of money the citizen received at the time of death. In this case, the specified payment is provided in the specified amount to each person entitled to it, and is not divided between them.
Reference! The spouse of the deceased (deceased) and his minor child can apply for this type of assistance from the state, regardless of the fact of being a dependent. If a child is studying full-time, the pension is paid to him until he reaches the age of 23. The parents of the deceased will receive payments from the state if they have reached the ages of 65 and 60 years (father and mother, respectively) and were dependent on the deceased.
An example of calculating payment if the experience is more than 25 years
For the calculation, we will take the above example as a basis, changing the total length of service in it. Let’s say the astronaut’s experience at the time of death was 28 years.
Then in the above formula the bonus for length of service will change and amount to 40%, and the employee’s salary will be 69,600 + 25% + 40% + 40% + 120% + 25% = 243,600 rubles. Since the size of the survivor's pension is 40% of the salary, then everyone entitled to such a payment will receive 243,600 * 40% = 97,440 rubles.
Conditions for receiving comonaut pensions in Russia
In order to be granted a long service pension, you must complete your career in the following positions:
- an astronaut who spent the last years before retirement engaged in research and testing;
- instructor training astronauts.
Place of work - strictly scientific organizations, associations organized by executive departments. At the same time, the state controls the activities of scientific institutions; they report on the results directly to the “powers that be.”
Experience requirement
Experience requirements remain the same. Future service pensioners must work in flight establishments for at least 10 years (for men) and 7.5 years (for women). In this case, the total work experience must be at least 25 (for men) or 20 years (for women).
If work activity is completed ahead of schedule due to health problems, then the total length of service of astronauts is allowed:
- 15 years for females;
- 20 years for males.
State disability pension for astronauts
Cosmonauts who become disabled due to concussion, illness or injury as a result of performing or preparing for a space flight, regardless of the duration of work, have the opportunity to receive disability benefits .
The method for calculating the amount of the state disability pension for astronauts is determined by Art. 17.1 of the Federal Law of December 15, 2001 No. 166-FZ “On State Pension Security”.
The calculation is based on wages received in accordance with the Regulations on material support for cosmonauts in the Russian Federation (approved by Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of May 17, 1993 No. 455).
Disability benefits for cosmonauts are determined in the following amounts:
- disabled people of groups I and II - 85% of salary ;
- disabled people of group III - 50% of salary .
For persons from among the cosmonauts, supplements for disability benefits are established in the same way as for pensions for work.
Calculation of pension benefits
By presenting your average income at your last place of work, you can approximately find out your level of monthly pension support. For astronauts this is 55 percent of their previous allowance. Also, the pension amount increases during overtime. Each year worked in excess of the norm is taken into account when calculating the standard service pension.
The form looks like this:
Pension amount (P) = monthly salary assigned by the Government of the Russian Federation (D) * 55 percent (55%)
P=D*55% - with a total work experience of 20 (15; 7.5) and 25 (20; 10).
If the length of service in a position is exceeded, then additional coefficients are applied:
L – the number of years that is greater than the target for retirement.
In this case, the formula is converted into another form:
P=D* 55% + D*3%*L – with length of service that exceeds the indicators established by the legislative acts of the Russian Federation.
Thus, the pension of cosmonauts in Russia during processing is 85 percent of the previous monetary allowance.
Calculation example. Citizen K has the right to a long-service pension, since he completed his work experience in the cosmonaut corps. His salary was 80 thousand rubles, and his total experience was 22 years.
80,000*55%+ 80,000*3%*2 (years of processing)=44,000+4,800=48,800
Questions and answers
Let's look at some of the most common and significant issues in the field of pension provision for former cosmonauts.
Can a retired astronaut get a job and keep payments?
The legislator has provided for the right of an astronaut to assign him a pension according to length of service in the event that he retires and leaves work as a test cosmonaut, research cosmonaut, test cosmonaut instructor, and research cosmonaut instructor. Upon return to the specified positions, the specified payment ceases.
However, a former astronaut has every right to get any other job in an area of interest to him. The long-service pension provided for by law will remain in full.
What periods of cosmonaut service will be included when calculating length of service?
In addition to actual work in the space industry, the period of work in positions related to the development and operation of space technology is also included in the total length of service. In addition, some periods of service in the Armed Forces of the USSR, Russia or the joint Armed Forces of the CIS countries can be counted towards the length of service of an astronaut.
Some periods of work are counted in multiples. In particular, space flight time is counted five times (five months), while as a general rule, the work time of full-time cosmonauts is counted twice (two months).
Important! To obtain the right to the considered support from the state, the condition of minimum experience in the flight test unit remains. In the absence of service in such a status, even the presence of general length of service does not give the right to a preferential pension as a former cosmonaut.
The following periods of work or service are counted towards flight test experience:
- as flight personnel of aircraft performing test flights;
- members of engineering teams also conducting test flights;
- workers inspecting flight personnel on test flights;
- as heads of flight test services.
Conditions for applying increased premiums
The list of cosmonauts also includes those persons who were awarded, unreasonably convicted during the period of Stalinist repressions, or actively participated in the sports life of the USSR (Russian Federation). Thus, Heroes of the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation receive 100 percent bonuses to their pensions.
Other categories of citizens who are entitled to allowances:
Olympic and Paralympic Champions | +50 percent |
Persons awarded the orders “Labor Glory”, “For Service to the Motherland in the USSR Armed Forces of three degrees” | +15 percent |
Former prisoners of concentration camps during the Second World War | +32% |
Illegally repressed and then rehabilitated | +16% |

Requirements for which astronauts are entitled to pension benefits
The amount of service compensation varies depending on general professional experience. All special categories of Russians are subject to personalized conditions for calculating the appropriate parameters. The amount of bereavement payments to the relatives of a deceased cosmonaut is 40% of the wages of breadwinners for each member of his family.

P = 55% Fow 3% Fow x St,
- P is the amount of payments for work with a working period of 25/20 years for men/women;
- Fov - financial allowance received under the regulatory act on financial support;
- St - length of service beyond what is necessary.
Important!
For each full year of service beyond the specified periods (for men and women, respectively), the pension increases by 3 percent, but not more than up to 85% of salary (earnings). When working for men of 20-25 years and women for 15-20 years, the amount of salary for working out is reduced by 2% of wages for years (including incomplete ones), which is not enough to reach the full amount of working out.
If there are some negative factors, then legal increases to the benefit for working off follow:
- As a percentage of the amount of social benefits - 5180.24 rubles. before April 1, 2019. After April 1. 2020 - 5382.27 rub.
- Those who have lived to their 80th birthday, disabled people of group 1, who require constant outside care according to a medical certificate - 200% of the basic amount of social benefits.
- Unemployed, by the time of the 55th anniversary or acquisition of disability, containing disabled people:
- brothers/sisters, grandchildren, children under 18 years of age or older - disabled since childhood - for life, full-time students - until the end of their studies, but not longer than 23 years. Grandchildren, sisters/brothers have the right to claim payments in the absence of parents providing for them. Adopted children also apply for this benefit along with natural children;
- grandparents - if there are no persons obligated to support them;
- spouses, mothers/fathers, if they are disabled or have reached the age of 60, 55 years. Adoptive parents also have rights to bereavement benefits. Stepmothers/stepfathers - if the deceased was supported and raised by them for at least 5 years.
Payment amounts:
- if there is 1 such family member - 32%;
- 2 – 64%;
- 3 or more - 100% of social benefits.
The volume of state pensions for long-term work for northerners and people living in areas with a harsh climate has been increased by the regional coefficient established by the Government, depending on the place of residence. When a person changes his place of residence, the amount of state support is calculated without this coefficient.
Pension increase
The pensions of astronauts and their relatives increase with the increase in wages received in accordance with the financial security act. If there was no increase in wages in calendar terms (from January 1 to December 31), benefits are recalculated from January 1 of the following year in an amount equal to the summed amount of the change in the volume of social benefits.
From April 1, 2019, the parameters of pensions provided for in Article 17.1 of Federal Law No. 166 increased by 2.4%.
The level of PVL of Russian astronauts depends on their professional experience and the amount of monetary allowance (hereinafter referred to as DD). The personal amount paid to the astronaut is 55% of the DD. If the final length of service at the time of pension appointment turns out to be more than that established by law, then the size of the personal allowance is increased by 3% for each full year of work worked in excess of the norm. In this case, the amount paid should not exceed 85% of the astronaut’s earnings.
A reducing multiplier (2%) when calculating PVL is applied if the professional experience of astronauts is 20-25 years for men and 15-20 for women. Then the amount of permanent residence permit will be reduced by 2% (of wages) for each year not completed to the required professional experience (whole or incomplete). In other words, the statutory 55% is reduced by a factor of 2% for each missing annual period of work.
When calculating PVL for citizens living in the Far North, the regional coefficient is applied. The amount due, increased due to this multiplier, will be paid only during the space flight participant's residence in this territory. In addition to the PVL, according to Russian law, astronauts are entitled to a number of allowances under special circumstances.
Amounts of additional payments to PVL | Terms of service |
200% social pension for disabled people of group 2 (except for disabled people from childhood) | Relies:

| Installed:
|
Indexing of astronauts' PVL is carried out when the amount of official salary increases. Recalculation is carried out from the time (day) of its increase. If the amount of personal income has not changed over 12 months, re-registration is carried out on the first day of the next year, taking into account the indexation of the amount of social pension in the previous annual period.

Additional guarantees for dependents
The work of an astronaut is work that is important for the development of humanity, science, and expanding the boundaries of the possible. Carrying out instructions from Roscosmos, cosmonauts risk their health and lives. Their close relatives should not suffer because of this.
According to the law of the Russian Federation, dependent families of astronauts receive a monthly allowance in the event of the tragic death of their father, son, or husband. A survivor's pension is sometimes granted for an indefinite period and is paid to family members who are unable to work for adequate reasons. It is 40 percent of the income of the deceased citizen.
Families have the right to additional guarantees during the life of the former astronaut.
Conditions for receiving:
- age from 55 years;
- recognition of disability.
The number of payments depends on the number of dependents (minor children, mother of the child, elderly father and mother):
Number of dependents | Percent |
one | 33% of average salary |
two | 64% of previous contentment |
three | 100% of monthly income |
Registration of a pension for long service
Without a time frame, a citizen has the opportunity to apply for an award (assignment) of this type of payment after the right to it arises . An application for the appointment of a pension must be submitted to the Pension Fund of Russia (PFR) or to the Multifunctional Center (MFC). It can be submitted independently, through a legal representative, or by mail. When submitting an application by mail, the day of application for payment is considered the date on the postal stamp from the place of departure, through the MFC - the date the application was received by the MFC.
An application for these pension payments is submitted to the HR department at work. In this case, the name of the recipient is the Chairman of the Board of the Fund.
The period for consideration of applications should not exceed 10 days from the date of application or missing documents provided later than the day the application was submitted. State pension payments are assigned from the 1st day of the month in which the person applied for it, but not earlier than from the day when the right to it arises.
