What benefits are available to citizens affected by the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant?

The terrible accident that occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986 has been echoing itself for more than 30 years.

Vast areas were exposed to radiation, and entire cities were left abandoned. Thousands of people received incurable diseases and remained disabled.

The Russian Federation still bears responsibility for compensation for damage caused to the health of victims during the elimination of the consequences of accidents. At the legislative level, a list of benefits is established both for the liquidation participants themselves and for their relatives: widows and children.

Every year the list changes, it is supplemented and expanded. What payments and benefits do Chernobyl survivors have and how can they be obtained?

What is the payment for working in the Chernobyl zone?

People living in these territories have the right to state assistance and certain types of benefits, the names of which are contained in the list determined in 1991. Depending on what zone the person was in, the list of payments is determined. The benefits a person receives are also affected by the length of time they live or work in contaminated areas. For example, Chernobyl payments relating to the zone subject to resettlement will be due to a person if he has lived or worked in this place for at least one year.

Features of providing assistance to relatives

Widows of the beneficiary retain the right to pay 50% of utilities and rent.

If a widow or other family member was dependent on Chernobyl victims, they are entitled to monthly payments.

Children receive places without waiting in line in general education, sanatorium, and preschool institutions.

The widow and other family members can get a place in a nursing home without a waiting list.

The state provides support to citizens and their family members affected by the Chernobyl disaster. The main thing is to know your rights and be able to formalize them on time.

Expert opinion

The estimated amounts of benefits for the category of disabled Chernobyl victims are necessarily indexed along with other government payments. If a citizen notices that after April 1 his monetary compensation has not changed, he must contact the Pension Fund or Social Security authorities. Some categories of beneficiaries do not know about regional preferences, so regular consultation with the relevant services is necessary. This way, a disabled person will protect himself from unnecessary costs and will be able to benefit from a full package of compensation guaranteed by the state and regional authorities.

The legislation marks and approves 4 zones, defined by Art. 7 of Law No. 1244-1 of May 15, 1991
